Broken garage door spring: what you need to know
A loud bang, then a very heavy door? It is often a spring. The warning signs, the right reflexes while you wait for the technician, and how the repair is carried out.

A loud bang in the garage, and the door won’t go up? Very often a garage door spring has just given way. With the right steps, the situation stays simple: the door waits quietly for the technician, and replacing a spring is routine work for our teams. Here is what you need to know, in five points, before calling our garage door repair service.
Broken garage door spring: the 5 key points
1. Recognising a broken spring
The first sign is a sound: a sharp crack like a whip, often with the door closed, sometimes mid-movement. After that, the door becomes very heavy, or the opener strains without managing to lift it. Some doors stop after a few centimetres, others go up crooked, lower on one side than the other.
From the ground, without going closer, you can sometimes see it: on a sectional garage door, a clear gap between two coils of the spring above the opening. A slack cable may come with the break. A look is enough: the diagnosis is the technician’s job. A worn or broken spring is not repaired, it is replaced.
2. Why a garage door spring breaks
The spring balances the weight of the door; the opener only guides it. That is why a door with a broken spring suddenly feels so heavy, and why there is no point in insisting with the remote: the whole opening mechanism relies on that balance.
There are two main families, depending on the type of door. Torsion springs wind around a shaft above the opening of a sectional garage door. Extension springs stretch along the sides of an up-and-over door. Either way, they work every time the door opens and closes.
A spring is designed for a given number of cycles: one cycle is one opening followed by one closing. A standard spring is often rated for around 10,000 cycles, which means several years of use for a family that opens its door a few times a day. Over time the metal tires, rust can set in, and it is often in cold weather that the spring finally snaps. A break after years of service is therefore the normal wear of a hard-working part at the end of its life.
3. Hands off the spring: leave it to the expert
Keep your hands away from the spring and leave the door where it is: even broken, a spring is still under very high tension, and the other spring, if there are two, is still loaded. Leave the cables, pulleys and brackets alone too. The risks are real: a spring that releases all at once can cause serious injury. No tutorial replaces a technician’s tools and expertise: changing a door spring yourself is never a good idea.
Also keep the door attached to its opener: the spring is what balances its weight. With a broken spring, don’t try to open it by hand: leave the emergency release handle alone, because once freed from the opener, the door can drop all at once. Our guide garage door stuck makes the same point under “Knowing when to stop”.
Good news: Hörmann sectional doors with torsion springs are fitted with a spring breakage safety device, which locks the shaft and holds the door if a spring breaks.
4. The right reflexes to make the door safe
Three simple steps, without tools and well away from the spring:
- Unplug the opener: pull its plug, or switch off its breaker in the fuse box. The motor stops straining and nobody can set the door off by mistake.
- Leave the door at rest: stop operating it and leave it where it stopped, open, closed or half-way. Keep children, pets and vehicles away from the doorway.
- Note the brand if you can find it: on the door’s label inside the garage, and on the opener cover. It will save the technician time.
If your car is still inside, mention it in your request: it is useful information for organising the call-out.
5. Spring replacement by the technician
The technician replaces the faulty spring with a matching one, suited to the weight and dimensions of your door. They often replace both at once: two springs of the same age wear at the same rate, and two new springs give a well-balanced door. They then adjust the tension, check the cables, pulleys and rollers, and test the door from start to finish, by hand and with the opener.
For Hörmann doors we use original parts, covered by the manufacturer’s warranty; for other brands, reliable compatible parts. As with any repair, you get a precise diagnosis of the fault and a transparent quote before any work starts.

Replacing a door spring: what you do, what the technician does
To keep the roles clear:
- You: listen, watch from the ground, unplug the opener, leave the door at rest, note the brand, and take a photo from a distance if you like.
- The technician: diagnoses the fault, releases and removes the old spring, fits the new one, sets the tension, checks cables, pulleys and rollers, and tests the door with the opener.
When it is the spring that gives way, the opener is usually in good condition: the technician checks it during the test. If it also shows signs of wear, our article on how to replace a garage door motor will help you see things clearly.
Regular maintenance: longer-lasting springs
A well-maintained spring lasts longer and the door stays pleasant to use. A yearly check spots a tired spring, a fraying cable or signs of rust in good time, and keeps the door optimally adjusted.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still use my garage door with a broken spring?
It is best to leave it at rest until the technician arrives. Unplug the opener, leave the door where it is and keep the area clear: the other spring and the cables are still under high tension.
How long does a garage door spring last?
Its life is counted in opening and closing cycles: a standard spring is often rated for around 10,000 cycles. Its actual lifespan depends on daily use, the climate and how well the door is maintained.
Should both springs be replaced at the same time?
That is often what the technician recommends: two springs of the same age wear at the same rate, and two new springs give a well-balanced door. They will tell you in the quote, before any work starts.
Do you repair springs on doors from brands other than Hörmann?
Yes. Our technicians work on most brands, with original parts for Hörmann and compatible parts for others. Mention the brand in your request if you know it.
How is the price of the repair set?
It depends on the type of spring, the size and weight of the door, and the number of springs to replace. The technician pinpoints the fault and gives you a transparent quote before starting work.
Do you offer garage door maintenance to homeowners?
Yes. Fermé-Lux maintains garage doors for homeowners and businesses alike: checks on springs, cables, rollers and opener, adjustments and lubrication of the parts that need it.
